Margo Handbag Pocket Details
Lazies, Let’s talk pockets! Margo pockets that is. Last week we introduced our upcoming design ‘Margo Handbag’, LGD127, arriving mid-May in time for Quilt Market. Here’s a close-up of one of Margo’s front pockets.
The striped fabric is the front wall of the bag. The little cool dot fabric behind it is the bag lining. The fun and funky geometric is the front pocket panel. Okay, we’ve identified the players. The cool geometric is lined with another piece of the striped fabric. And the geometric picks up again on the back of the bag.
I tried a few things with this pocket panel including interfacing and I simply didn’t like what it did to the bag. And that surprised me. I interfaced the geometric print with a layer of light-mid weight fusible Stacy Shape Flex from Pellon (I love this product, LOVE) and the panel felt great. Super in fact. It had a fabulous confident drape.
But, once sewn into place on the final bag, the interfacing actually restricted the pocket’s flexibility. I loved how it looked. It added to the bulk at the seams, which was manageable.
But, it made the pockets less usable because the fabric had less give.
So, this lined pocket panel is not interfaced. Sewing the panel into the bag design at the seams, and a line of stitching down the middle to make two pockets, gives it structure and stability where it is needed at the edges, and the main part of the pockets remains highly usable and functional.
We’ve finalized the pattern cover of Margo.
As my friend Carolyn observed, the angle of the pocket cut-out is similar to the angle of the bottom/side corner of the bag. No accident there. Repeating this angle is a design element meant to unify the project.
More on Margo soon…
Enjoy!
Joan
Can hardly wait until the middle of May, Margo looks like another winner. Thanks Lazy Girl for the fun and easy patterns, keep them coming !!! Jackie
Love it and feel it is such a clean design!
I just love this design. The pocket angle is so unique and I can’t wait to see how it is done.
Would love to see the back side of the pattern so I can get my “materials” lined up for this one! My Grace and Claire have been hard workers over the winter and so they will get a break when I get Margo in the loop!
Blessings,
Bunny
OOh – love it even more!
OOH I just love what I’m seeing with this bag. Can’t wait for it to come out. Just in ttime for a new summer purse.

Dear Joan,
I just love your designs and clear instructions, which were responsible for my addiction. I now need Lazy Girl bags to hold all my Lazy Girl bags, thanks to you and my parallel fabric addiction. Keep ’em coming!
I’m also looking forward to seeing just how those angled pockets are done ~ that and the zipper are my favorite elements ~ so far!
I’m anxious to see the inside of the bag — are the seams on the inside concealed by the lining or exposed? Thanks for your insights on the interfacing… very helpful! I’m sure this bag will be a winner!
Really like the lines of the bag & the design pockets. Will definately buy this pattern.
Love the idea of a zipper in the top of the bag.
Come on May!! So we can get the pattern.
What a great new Lazy Girl. Your patterns are always such an inspiration. Can wait to buy Margo!!
Joan
Have you ever thought of having your patterns available for direct downloads? For those of us how cannot wait, it would be great. I always have to search to find your patterns and order them online and wait!!! When it comes to fun, I guess I have no patience.
Janet
I can’t wait to make this design. Love the angled pocket as a design feature. Certainly a unique design. Who will be your first online vendor to have the Margo pattern. I want to order as soon as it’s available. Can you share the fabric requirements. I’m going fabric shopping on Friday… I won’t be “good” fabric shopping again for a couple of months. Although, truth be known, I have a stash larger than life..
Joan,
This has interesting lines. And I am looking forward to making a bunch for me and as gifts.
I too would love to be able to download the instructions, I have to find a “mule” to bring my goodies down and I often have to wait a long time.
Patience is NOT one of my virtues.

I just love your designs and this pattern is no exception. Thank you!
Looks like another great pattern. I really like a zipper in a bag. Joan, can you please let us know how much fabric and size of zipper Margo takes? I really enjoy making all your patterns. People don’t believe me when I tell them that I have made my purse. I had a clerk in a high end retail store ask me if my Towne Purse was a Vera Bradley? Told her no, that I made it from a Lazy Girl pattern.
Can’t wait for May!
I also wish you had downloadable patterns-I have a hard time finding your patterns in Canada and always have to order and wait (and wait, and wait, and wait)!
Has there been any disclosure of fabric requirements yet? I’ll be going through my stash in the next couple of weeks and evaluating its potential, so this could be quite useful….
Thanks!
I love Margo! I also love the fabric line. What is it??
This purse looks awesome! this will be my first Lazy Girl pattern. Can’t wait to get started on one.
I can hardly wait to get the Margo Purse Pattern!! I just love all your designs but this one is really awesome!! Any way we can get the fabric requirements soon? My favorite quilt shop is having a sale next week and I would love to get the fabric needed for this project!! Just thought I would ask!! Keep those designs coming!!
Are there any corrections on the pattern ? I’m stuck ;(
Hi Beth Snider, Email me with more info and we’ll work through it together.
